The first of February was hourly comic day; I didn't participate, but @grickle and @verabee's exchange inspired me. My original response may have been more sincere, but since coming up with the idea I've been actually good about responding to random machine noises. The main benefit of this is that the random solicitors think you're crazy.
As a result of coming up with the idea of this comic, I've adopted the practice of responding to weird electronic noises. Sadly, my coworkers can confirm this; I've taken up the related habit of thanking back to my phone for its various notifications.
Emulating the half-conversation that some have on phones has caused me to find a ton of hidden humor. Through paying attention to peoples' half-conversations, on the phone for instance, I've become more observant of the strange innuendos that are inadvertently made during any such half-conversation.
When you feign having one of these half conversations the funny bit is left to the observer/audience. All the comedian has to do is come up with responses to what may be a funny line of conversation and let the audience fill the gap.
