One of last week's comics mentioned the use of "stress positions" as an interrogation technique. While my foret into political commentary is a little late, I couldn't pass up a chance to mock Rumsfeld's actual comment on the use of stress positions. He actually wrote and initialed one of those quotes in the comic.
Perhaps we've all taken his text incorrectly. Perhaps Rumsfeld was being sarcastic when he wrote, "I stand for 8-10 hours a day. Why is standing limited to four hours?" Maybe he just didn't realize that his humorous tone would not come through in his crappy handwriting. Just as Arthur C. Clark wrote that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", I posit that any sufficiently strong sarcasm is indistinguishable from stupidity.
Stress positions are pretty bad, but from my online research they've been a pretty standard practice by many groups for ages. While doing research for this comic, I found a list of commonly used
torture information gathering techniques, and stress positions were at the bottom of that list. One of the craziest was simply sleep deprivation; which I found out, as a physical need, supersedes even hunger and thirst.
This all has gotten heavy. For the next comic, I promise something of a lighter nature; perhaps some kind of dick joke.
